Simple definition
Cartomancy is using a standard 52-card playing deck as a divination tool. You can use the cards to explore a question, situation, relationship, choice, or possible direction.
You do not need a special deck. The same kind of deck used for ordinary card games can be used for this practice.
The system matters
Different readers may use different meanings. That does not mean you have to keep changing your definitions every time you find another list online. For this class, learn one system first and become familiar with it.
The meanings here match the cheat sheet and learning game already on this website.
Hunter's approach
Learn the structure, understand the meanings, then allow your intuition to work with what is in front of you. The card gives you a starting point. The question, the surrounding cards, and what you notice can help you understand how that meaning applies.

Practice without memorizing cards yet
Shuffle your deck and pull five cards. Ignore the individual meanings. Just identify the suit and ask yourself: What general area or type of energy is this card pointing toward?
Use these as broad anchors
- Aces: new beginnings, starts, or a strong opening energy.
- Number cards: situations, events, stages, or what is happening.
- Face cards: often people, personalities, roles, messages, or a person's energy in the situation.
Don't force a face card to be literal
A Queen does not always have to mean a literal woman and a King does not always have to mean a literal man. Start with the written meaning, then use the question and context to decide how it fits.
How to learn this without overwhelm
Work one suit at a time. Learn the general suit meaning first, then notice the individual cards as you use them. Repetition will do more for you than trying to memorize all 52 in one sitting.

You don't need a complicated ritual
- Find a space where you can focus for a few minutes.
- Decide what you are asking about.
- Take a moment to settle yourself and set your intention for the reading.
- Shuffle the cards while holding the question in mind.
- Draw the card or cards for the spread you are using.
- Read the card meaning first, then notice what else comes to you.
Ask a useful question
Clear questions usually produce easier readings. Instead of asking five questions at once, choose one subject and let the cards respond to that.
Keep your power
Use a reading for insight, reflection, and possible direction — not as permission to hand every decision over to the cards. The cards speak, but you have the power to choose.
One-card practice
- Ask one clear question.
- Shuffle and draw one card.
- Identify the suit before looking up the exact meaning.
- Read the card's meaning.
- Ask: How could this meaning apply to the question I asked?
- Notice your first thought, feeling, word, or knowing before overthinking it.
Record first, verify later
If the reading is about something that can later be checked, write down what you thought the card meant before you know the outcome. That helps you learn how your own intuition works with the cards.
Past, present, future is only one option
You can also use three cards as Situation • Challenge • Guidance, Mind • Body • Spirit, or Question • What helps • What to watch. The important part is deciding what each position means before you draw.
Read each card, then read the group
Start with each card's written meaning. After that, look at the three cards together. Are the suits mostly positive? Are there repeated themes? Does one card seem to explain another? This is where a reading starts becoming a story instead of three separate definitions.
The card meaning is the foundation
Use the written meaning as your anchor. Then ask how that meaning fits the actual question. A card about change can look very different in a relationship question than it does in a work question.
Nearby cards influence each other
When you use more than one card, do not read every card in isolation. One card may show the problem while the next shows the movement, person, lesson, or possible outcome connected to it.
A simple reading formula
Card meaning → question → surrounding cards → your first intuitive impression.
Don't stretch the definition until it says what you want
Intuition can add context, but try not to completely reverse a card just because you prefer a different answer. Staying grounded in your system helps you notice when you are interpreting versus hoping.
A simple practice routine
- Pull one card and name the suit before checking the meaning.
- Use the learning game for short sessions instead of cramming all 52 cards.
- Practice three-card spreads on questions where you can later observe what happened.
- Write down your first interpretation before looking for confirmation.
- Review old readings and look for patterns in what you understood well.
You do not have to journal everything
If journaling helps you, use it. If it feels like homework, keep a short note instead: question, cards, first impression, and what happened later.
What matters most
You do not need perfect recall before you start reading. Know the four suits, use your reference when you need it, stay consistent with your meanings, and practice putting the cards into context.
You've got the foundation. 🃏
Cartomancy gets easier through repetition. Keep the system simple, let the card meanings give you structure, and let your intuition help you understand how the message applies.
